4.9 Join a group to be more socially active

A local group or club is a great way of socialising and meeting new people

There are groups or clubs for interests (various hobbies, technology, sports), groups which do community work and groups representing specific cultures. Your local council usually has a list of local groups, look on their website or phone them. Also consider 3.10 Dementia friendly groups and activities.

Join a peer support group

Some people with dementia told us what a big difference peer support with others with dementia made to their outlook on life. Before meeting their peers with dementia, some had preconceptions about the capabilities of their peers, given that they might have had dementia for some years. They were also unsure about how they would feel interacting with other people with dementia.

Many told us how they really valued the support they received from peer support groups. They describe peer support groups as a safe space to be themselves, and develop real friendships. The peer support group is a reciprocal experience. It provides an opportunity to support others as well as receive support yourself.
